Human Anatomy Terminologies
Anterior/Ventral - The front side of the human body in anatomic position for humans (ventral and anterior can’t be used interchangeably when talking about four-legged animals)
Posterior/Dorsal - The backside of the human body (posterior and dorsal can't be used interchangeably when talking about four-legged animals)
Superior - upper region of the body; can also be used to describe a part that is above another body part
Inferior - lower region of the body; can also be used to describe a part of the body that is below another body part
Medial - body part of region pertaining close the middle of the body
Lateral - body part of region referring the outside of the body
Distal - situated away from the point of attachment or origin; located away from the center of the body
Proximal - situated next to or near the point of attachment or origin; located toward the center of the body
Superficial - on or close to the skin
Deep - beneath the upper layer of the skin
Abdominal - referring to the midsection of the body
Antecubital - the front side of the elbow
Axillary - armpit
Buccal - cheek
Coxal - hip
Cephalic - head
Cervical - neck
Thoracic - chest
Pelvic - pelvis area
Inguinal - groin
Patellar - front of the knee
Tarsal - ankle
Digital - toes and fingers
Umbilical - belly button
Calcaneal - heel
Orbital - eyes
Nasal - nose
Oral - mouth
Femoral - thigh
Sternal - breastbone
Scapular - shoulder blades
Vertebral - referring to the backbone
Occipital - base of the skull
