BROWN’S HOTEL
ОглавлениеThe English Tea Room
Quintessentially English, Brown’s began life as four adjacent Georgian houses before Lord Byron’s butler and his wife, who was Lady Byron’s maid, created a hotel here in 1837. Tea has been served here ever since, and more than 170 years on, you would find it hard to surpass the surroundings and ambience of the English Tea Room, where the staff are dedicated to the highest level of service and take care of guests with the utmost courtesy and discreet efficiency. The elegant room is a harmonious combination of contemporary furnishings and artwork, original wood paneling, and antique fireplaces where open fires glow in the colder months. The tables are set with crisp linen and fine bone china, and the pianist playing gently in the background creates a lovely atmosphere.
The traditional tea features all the important ingredients, from extremely good finger sandwiches on a variety of breads, to super fruit and plain scones served with clotted cream and strawberry jam. You’ll welcome the palate cleanser that precedes the daintiest of pastries, which, depending on the season, could include a delectable peach and lemon verbena macaron, a violet and berry cheesecake, or a pistachio and cherry financier. If you are watching your waistline and looking for a healthier option, then Tea-Tox, created by Madeleine Shaw, is just the ticket. There are no scones served with this tea, but rather imaginative open sandwiches and savouries, a platter of fresh fruit with yogurt and honey, and sugarless cakes and desserts. There is even a low-calorie champagne. Regardless of the tea you choose, expect everything to be regularly replenished and for your teapot to be refilled with the finest loose-leaf tea chosen from over seventeen listed in the Tea Library, including two of Brown’s own special blends. An hour and a half whiled away in the English Tea Room will refresh and revive you, and as you leave there is a gift of cake to take home with you. Brown’s Hotel is, justifiably, a very popular haunt for visitors and locals alike, so be sure to book in advance.
