Indigo, Psychic, or Crystal?

In 1999 Lee Carroll and Jan Tober introduced to the world a growing phenomenon observed by numerous professionals who worked with children: an unusual group of youngsters they called Indigo Children. The members of this group were described by social workers and health care facilitators alike as extremely self-confident, independent, and self-motivated—strong-willed yet responsible, highly assertive yet unusually compassionate, exceptionally intelligent yet nonconforming.

Many parents could find, within Carroll and Tober’s descriptions, characteristics that fit their own children. There was the bluish tone found in the skin between the eyes or elsewhere on the child’s face. It was also suggested that many children who had been labeled as having learning disabilities, ADD, or ADHD were probably Indigo Children. The children were described as exceptionally bright, highly creative, and aware of what they wanted to do in the world. There were descriptions of three categories of Indigo Children: conceptual, humanistic, and artistic. The conceptuals were usually technologically oriented and were often unwilling to accept any authority other than their own inner sense of rightness. The humanists were described as compassionate and concerned for the welfare of others almost from birth. The artistic children were far beyond their years in the development of their artistic abilities in any of a number of fields.

Suggestions for raising Indigo Children included always giving choices and explanations, avoiding acting as an authority, being honest and keeping one’s word, never hitting or abusing in any way, always talking things over, showing respect, and letting love show in many ways.

Certain educational paradigms were suggested to the parents of Indigo Children when looking for or evaluating a potential school or classroom for their child. Some of the elements thought to be helpful or supportive for Indigos were: positive atmosphere, respect for all students, involvement of students in decision-making processes, interesting and appropriate materials, explained purposefulness of all work done, clear and consistent expectations, ways for dealing positively with conflict, frequent praise and compliments, discipline as guidance rather than as punishment, and variations in curricula according to individual needs and interests.

Some of the children in Carroll and Tober’s research were also called interdimensional—a term that could mean either that they had come to earth from other levels of consciousness or that they were from other known planets or star systems. These children were seen as somewhat different from those who had lived all their lives in the earth system—so perhaps they were not really Indigos after all. However, as with all Indigo Children, love and respect were seen as the keys to raising and working with these youngsters, too. (Nancy Baumgarten, director of a camp for intuitive children, and her teenage-daughter Llael, who functions in many dimensions, have co-written a book, Profound Awareness, about how to parent the interdimensional child.)

Finally, Indigo Children were sometimes seen as proof that the human species was entering a new phase of its development, evolving to a new and unprecedented level. Indigo Children were observed to be far more aware of themselves and others than were other, previous generations. Although this aspect of Indigos has yet to be researched in depth, it nevertheless offers the promise of humanity’s making a difference in its own destiny—in the possibility of a planetary shift to cooperation and compassion as opposed to a future of hatred and violence. Perhaps Indigos are the children of Atlantis, incarnated again to correct former mistakes and to help bring the world to a higher level of understanding.

Where, then, do the recently touted Psychic Children come into play in the Indigo scenario? Some have considered that they may comprise the group that Carroll and Tober have called the “humanist” Indigos. Futurist Gordon-Michael Scallion, in his audio presentation, Children of the Blue Ray, suggests that highly evolved children incarnating today who exhibit certain temperaments and interests from an early age have come into life as part of a specific group within the “Blue Ray,” as he calls it. Those of the Indigo group are especially powerful on higher, creative mental levels, for example. Those of the Green group are the loving empaths and healers.

The Psychic Children are known to have an unusual ability to communicate without words among themselves. They seem to hold all plants and animals on the earth as precious and sacred, and they continually act and speak as though all that really is meaningful in the world is genuine love. Perhaps these are indeed the humanistic Indigos, or the children of the Green Ray/heart chakra within the higher frequencies of light—returning from Lemuria as the children of Zu (Cayce), Mu (from Hawaiian legend and such books as The Ultimate Frontier), and Oz (Twyman). Indeed, peace troubadour James Twyman calls them overtly the Children of Oz. They have come to be the healers of the earth and its people—prepared to help raise all of humanity to the next level of consciousness through the power of love.

These are children who communicate easily with animals and nature spirits—who are specialists in using the gifts of the natural world. These children innately know how to use herbs and energies from the earth’s subtle vibrations for the healing of their fellow humans, of animals, of the earth itself. They are often passionate about reversing the effects of human pollution, waste, and industrial processes on the natural ecological balance of the planet. They are committed to finding and using the best methods of healing for both human and ecological imbalances and illnesses. They epitomize the all-encompassing energy of Love, which they want to share with everyone on the earth. According to Twyman, it is these children who have prepared the new worldwide grid of psychic awareness and love, in order to raise the entire world’s vibration to one of peace, balance, and universal love. This is their gift to us. Our gift to them is a nurturance of their gifts and the offering of opportunities for them to fulfill their mission of Love.

Finally, there are the newly arrived Crystal Children. They were first mentioned by psychic Steve Rother, who received his information from a matrix he called The Group. Lee Carroll has suggested that they are the artistic Indigos. Rother says that they are often greatly misunderstood and called autistic. According to Doreen Virtue in her book The Crystal Children, they are actually “awe-tistic”!

Virtue states that these children have mostly been born since 1995 and are calm, happy, amazingly telepathic, and highly spiritual as opposed to the feisty, action-oriented, determined conceptual Indigos on whom Virtue says the Crystal Children depend to clear the path for them, creating a safe world into which they can incarnate. She indicates that the Crystal Children generate pastel auras in the very highest vibratory ranges as they usher in an age in which communication will be instantaneously mind-to-mind, and collective love and high spiritual connection will bring about a new world in which absolutely anything is possible!
