“Chowan University offers a personal liberal arts education in a rural, church-related setting, with regionally acclaimed programs in biology, psychology, criminal justice, graphic communication, business administration, teacher education, history and physical education. Campus Setting

Chowan, founded in 1848, is a private, church-affiliated, liberal arts college. Its 300-acre campus is located in Murfreesboro, 60 miles from Norfolk. A four-year institution, Chowan University has an enrollment of 1,367 students. Although not originally a co-educational college, Chowan University has been co-ed since 1931. The school is also affiliated with the Baptist Church. The school also has a library with 200,000 books. Chowan University provides on-campus housing with 800 units that can accommodate 1,020 students. Housing options: women's dorms · men's dorms · special housing for disabled students.

Student Life and Activities

Eighty-five percent of students live on campus, and popular events include Homecoming and Snow Ball. Chowan University is a member of the NCAA (Division II), NCCAA and CIAA.

Academics and Learning Environment

Chowan University has 62 full-time and 29 part-time faculty members, and offers a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1. Chowan University offers 28 majors with the most popular being business administration, physical education and psychology. The least popular are religion, music and mathematics. The school has a general core requirement as well as a religion requirement. Cooperative education is not offered. All first-year students must maintain a 1.5 GPA or higher to avoid academic probation, and a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required to graduate. B Student Support and Success

Chowan offers its entire student body a tutoring program located in the campus library. Students request a tutor in any area of study by filling out an online tutor request form. Student tutors work one on one with students to provide this service four nights a week at no cost. Chowan also has Camp 121, a tutoring center that gives students a quiet space for individual studying between the hours of 9 and 5. Individual and group study sessions are frequently held at Camp 121 as well.

Chowan University provides dedicated guidance for academic, career and religion. The average freshman year GPA is 2.4.

Support for Students with Learning Disabilities
