Excerpt from Screw the Valley

THE AREA around the central North Carolina state capital of Raleigh is known locally as the “fall line,” in reference to the waterfalls and rapids that are common in nearby waterways. The phenomenon is due to the basic geography of the area, which happens to be where the hilly, upland North America Piedmont and flat Atlantic Coastal Plain meet.
