Later in the year, Trafford places an advert on the Bolton Institute noticeboard, which reads: ‘Wanted – people to form a group to do a version of Sister Ray’ (the notice was also rumoured to contain a reference to euphonium players). As a big Velvet Underground fan, McNeish knows all their work, and so he phones Trafford. While McNeish and Trafford work out cover versions of Stooges songs such as ‘Your Pretty Face Has Gone to Hell’, and ‘The True Wheel’, practising at parents’ homes, various other musicians join and leave.
Garth Davies remembers, ‘As far as I was concerned at the beginning, Howard was actually going to be the latest member of Jets of Air, but he and Pete had the idea of forming a new band.
