Chapter Five AGENT BLAKE

Оглавление

Luke continues to read the paper. He notices a smaller story “Unexplained ageing kills man in Russia”. The phone rings, Luke is distracted and puts the paper down, it is Ben McAllister, the captain of the police station from the next town.

“Captain Whelan, may I help you?”

“Luke it’s Ben, how are you and Jack feeling?”

“Apart from a bit of a headache, we are both fine.”

“While you two hero boys were relaxing in your hospital beds, we took away the guy you shot. We took his fingerprints and sent them off to Washington to be identified. I just got a call from Special Agent Don Blake, you know, the guy from the FBI who is always on the news about the Mafia. Well, he was more than interested and is coming down there to talk to you two guys.”

“Did he say anything else?” replies Luke.

“No, and he is coming to see you today around 1:00 pm. He just wants to talk to you.”

Outside of the police station two black Ford Plymouth cars pull up. A number of men get out in similar suits but Special Agent Don Blake is unmistakable because of his muscular build and chiseled features. He steps out of his car and heads straight for Luke’s office.

The other men wait around the cars, outside the station.

“Captain Luke Whelan, Special Agent Don Blake, how are you?”

“Very well Sir. You look bigger on TV. This is Sergeant Jack Cummings, my partner.”

They sit down around Luke’s desk and Blake picks up the local paper and sees Luke’s picture and Geatano Fortizzo’s article underneath.

“Did any of you know who the man you shot yesterday was?” asks Blake.

“No Sir, we were just called to an armed robbery and did what we had to do,” replies Luke.

Blake points to the article in the paper and says...

“The man you shot was one of Fortizzo’s men. He is in the FBI’s top 10 most wanted list. We have been looking for him for months. He was suppose to testify against Fortizzo in a criminal case but got cold feet and has been hiding for months.

“We know that Fortizzo’s men were looking for him too. He has a history of hold ups but we never could pin him down until now. It’s not the result we wanted, we needed him alive. I have been trying to nail that scum Fortizzo for years and this guy could have helped.”

“I am sorry Sir. We are a small country town. Even if we knew who he was, the outcome would have still been the same because he was putting innocent people’s lives in danger. We had to do our job,” replies Luke.

“Yes, that’s right, you have done nothing wrong son, and from what I have heard, it was a job well done”.

“What does this mean? What is the connection between Fortizzo and Gallas?” asks Jack.

“We think that he had a hand in his killing, in fact I’m sure he was involved, but we have to prove that, and this guy is like Teflon.”

“Anybody could have shot him in the head,” says Luke.

“Yes, anybody could have done it but nobody knew where Gallas would be running. He loved to run in the mornings but everyday it would be a new route that only a few people knew.

“Now Luke, this is my personal card with my office, home and cell number. I think that Fortizzo will try and contact you somehow because I am sure he will find out that you killed one of his men. He probably already knows.

“I don’t know what kind of contact it will be because he wanted him dead. Nevertheless, if he contacts you, you are to call me straight away, anytime day or night – deal?” says Blake.

“Yes Sir, of course,” replies Luke, glancing at Jack.

“Thank you for your time gentlemen and have a good day.”
