ОглавлениеW. HARRISON AINSWORTH
William Harrison Ainsworth was born in Manchester, England in 1805. Despite training as a lawyer, Ainsworth never pursued law as a profession, and worked briefly in publishing before devoting himself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came with his 1934 novel Rockwood, a Gothic romance featuring Dick Turpin as its protagonist. He went on to pen 39 novels, writing right up to the year of his death. Of these other works, his account of English witchcraft, The Lancashire Witches (1849), and his ‘Newgate Novels’, are arguably his most well-known. Ainsworth also edited the magazines Bentley’s Miscellany, Ainsworth’s Magazine and The New Monthly Magazine. He died in 1882, aged 76.
