Traditionally, women were already carrying the primary load as caregivers before the onset of the pandemic. According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in the United States,²¹ 59 percent of women reported that they perform more household chores than their spouse or partner. The same study revealed that only 46 percent share equal domestic responsibilities with their partner. These numbers are worse in developing countries or nations with poor women's rights.²²

With the abrupt crises and closure of schools and daycare centers worldwide, the workload dramatically increased for women. As with all times of stress and anxiety, families and the community at large found comfort in the caregiving nature of women. Women are expected to take care of their families and household duties without any additional support. Some men are now more involved with their families, but that percentage is still low overall.
