The Approximate Beginning of Jesus’ Second Year of Ministry

Оглавление

The second year of Jesus’ ministry is generally spent around the northern part of the Sea of Galilee. He moves to Capernaum and travels throughout the local area except for a trip to Jerusalem. He also continues to select disciples during this time period. During this time period he is healing and preaching and is continually training his disciples. Jesus in many cases teaches his disciples by example when healing and speaking to those that are suffering from many different types of afflictions. He teaches His disciples by showing love and mercy for those that are in need. He is not a respecter of wealth or status, but looks straight into their spirit to determine if they have faith, love, hope and charity. He is looking for a spirit that will be receptive to God’s word and will love God and show His love to their neighbors.

Healing of a man with a demon

Jesus was preaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath in Capernaum when a man began shouting at Jesus. The man was possessed by a demon and could not control himself. Jesus healed this man and the news of the healing quickly spread throughout the area.

Mark 1:21-28 reads, And they went into Capernaum: and straightway on the Sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit: and he cried out. Saying let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Hold thy peace, and come out of him.” And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

When Jesus speaks the words “Hold thy peace” the unclean spirit is held and then removed from this man in torment. We see today that people who are completely consumed by their own greed will begin to convulse when they hear God’s word. They recognize God’s word and are quick to react asking to be left alone. The demons of today are no different than the demons that Jesus drove from this poor man.

Healing of Simon’s (Peter) mother-in-law and others

After leaving the synagogue Jesus and the disciples went to Simon’s (Peter) home. There they met Peter’s mother-in-law who was suffering from a high fever and there they asked Jesus to help her.

Luke 4:38-39 reads, And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever: and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

Many more people were then brought to Jesus that day for the healing of different health issues. The sun was setting and it was now appropriate to carry the sick.

Luke 4:40-41 reads, Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with drivers disease brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

The word spread quickly that Jesus was able the heal people of many different affirmatives. Jesus was the example of one who loves his neighbor and is willing help those in need. However, Jesus wanted to focus on his primary mission to redeem sinners from death and not allow the healing to take away from his mission.

Miracle at Sea of Galilee

Jesus instructs Peter to move the boat out further into the lake to catch more fish. Peter explains they have been fishing all night and have not caught any fish. But, he now follows Jesus’ direction regardless of what he has experienced and moves the boat and lets down the nets. Peter, an expert fisherman, has not allowed his pride to take control of his words and actions, but takes instruction from Jesus. Pride, arrogance, and ego will block communication with the Holy Spirit and will prevent blessings from taking place in our life and those around us.
