Introduction

This guide is designed to help prepare you and your staff on how to respond in a medical emergency. It contains information on designating staff roles, as well as steps that can be taken when you encounter an emergency in the dental office. It includes sample duty cards that can be used for assigning staff roles and responsibilities during a medical emergency. These sample duty cards may be copied, laminated and posted where they’ll be readily available for you and your staff to access during an emergency.

It also includes sample instruction cards with information on managing various medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. Information is shown for scenarios where the dentist is present and leading the team (red side) and also for when the dentist is absent (blue side).

It is strongly recommended that you watch the accompanying medical emergencies video series before using the guide. Please note that the guide and videos are not a substitute for emergency preparedness training on the skills that may be required to respond to an emergency.
