Scripture text—Isaiah 28:9–10

Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.

Scripture can be confusing. It takes much study to put it all together. God knows this truth. He uses milk and meat allegorically to represent scriptural depth. Like newborn babies that consume milk from the mother’s breast, people that are new to Bible study must have patience and try not to digest the hard stuff too quickly. This will build confusion and the untruth that scripture contradicts itself and is not literal.

Scripture builds upon itself like Isaiah the prophet states. It explains itself when studied diligently. Indeed it is difficult even for those that have studied a long time. Take the time to understand the basics before biting off more than you can chew. Meat takes much chewing. Beginners are wise to remain in the Gospel of John and the book of Romans at first. All the basics are there, and then branch out. Always ask for God’s help in understanding his truths.

There are no contradictions in the Bible and it is literal. God does use analogies, metaphors, and parables but he is sure to let the reader know exactly when he is doing that. Otherwise, he means exactly what he says. I find Ezekiel especially challenging. If new Christians open to Judges chapter 19, they may slam the Bible closed and run from it.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3:2, “I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.” God says that we will find him when we seek him with all our heart. It is a good thing that understanding the entire Bible is not a condition of salvation. Believing in and accepting God’s gift of his son, Jesus, to atone for our sins is the ticket. You will surely want to spend time daily studying the scriptures, old and new. He gave us the Bible for the purpose of knowing him and his will. Dig in and be fed; nothing else really matters.
