Preface

This study, which is presented here in German, Hungarian and English, is the result of academic research conducted by the author over the past three decades on the transformation of the political system in Hungary in the last third of the 1980s. These investigations have resulted in numerous publications, which – together with the relevant secondary literature and the most important source collections in the three languages mentioned – are set out in the list of sources and literature. Based on this list, which also contains a translation of the titles in the other two languages, and refers to versions in a second language, the reader can deal with the topic in greater depth. Also, for this reason, but especially in the interest of readability, the work dispenses with an academic annotation apparatus. After the three decades that have now passed since the change of the political system in Hungary, and against the background of the current political situation in that country, it seemed important to the author to present a multilingual, concise and scientifically based review of these spectacular years, one that – beyond the academic world – is aimed particularly at a broad circle of readers interested in history and politics.
