Later that evening, the children headed to the scary house and broke their parents’ order not to leave the yard. Anna went with them, too.

Этим же вечером ребята отправились к страшному дому. Они вышли из своего двора, нарушив указание родителей. Аня тоже была с ними.

When they finally came, it became really scary. Crows were circling around the roof of the house, the sun hid behind a large black and grim cloud.

Когда они подошли к одинокому дому без окон, стало совсем страшно. Над ним летали черные вороны, а солнце спряталось за огромную мрачную тучу.

Several kids had already abandoned the expedition along the way and hurried home. But Bobby, as the oldest, knew that they were just afraid.

По дороге от всей экспедиции уже отстало несколько ребят. Они по каким-то причинам заторопились домой, но Вова, как самый старший, понимал, что они просто испугались.

– So, – Bobby broke the silence, – let’s go in?

Only three of them dared to come this far: Bobby, Anna and Charlie.

– I’d rather wait for you right here, – said Charile.

– Ну что, – заговорил он, – заходим?

Ребят осталось только трое: Вова, Аня и Дима. Дима проговорил:

– Я, наверное, подожду вас тут.

Bobby and Anna looked at each other and stepped closer to the door. Bobby lifted his arm and pulled the door by the padlock. It was locked.

Then Anna knocked three times on the door with her fist. The padlock clicked and the door squeaked half-open.

– Looks like we’re expected, – Bobby said.

Вова и Аня посмотрели друг на друга и подошли ближе к двери. Вова поднял руку и дернул дверь за огромный железный замок. Дверь была заперта. Тогда Аня три раза стукнула по двери кулаком. После этого замок щелкнул и дверь со скрипом приоткрылась.

– Кажется, нас ждут, – проговорил Вова.

They entered, and the door instantly slammed behind them. In the middle of the room, they saw a high armchair with its back turned to them. It stood beside a fireplace, but, strangely, the house did not have a chimney. Somebody was sitting in the chair, unseen behind the back of the armchair. The children could see only the tip of a long nose.

Ребята зашли внутрь. Как только они переступили порог, дверь со скрипом захлопнулась. Посередине комнаты стояло высокое кресло. Оно было повернуто спиной к ребятам. Напротив него горел огонь в камине. Что было странно, так как трубы у дома не было. В кресле кто-то сидел. Ребята не могли видеть, кто же скрывался за спинкой кресла. Из-за спинки торчал лишь кончик длинного носа.

– What do you want? – a cracking voice said.

The children did not know what to say. All of a sudden, the man turned in his chair. Anna and Bobby saw an old man with a big nose. He eyed them with anger.

– Что вам тут нужно? —раздался хриплый голос.

Ребята потеряли дар речи и стояли молча. Неожиданно, сидящий в кресле человек обернулся. Аня и Вова увидели старика с огромным носом. Его взгляд был полон злобы.

– You have bothered me! You will have to pay for it.

He waved his hand, and everything in the room started flying and jumping around. Tables, chairs and commodes went whirling in the air. Mice, bugs and beetles left their holes and began squeaking and ringing. Every single thing was flying with monstrous speed, so the kids could not find a place to stand. They rushed to and fro.
