Markers used to be mainly known as a coloring supply for kids, but not today!

Today you can easily find numerous types and brands of markers, and not just

at an art store—your supermarket probably sells some really good ones. The

main thing you need to know is that markers are typically either water-based

or alcohol-based. The markers I use most often are alcohol-based, but water-

based markers also play a huge part in my creative process. They are both great

for specific things and can even be used together once you know what each

one does. Playing around with both types individually, then together, is going to

give you the best idea for how you might want to use them for your own projects.

Here you can see the difference between color layered with an alcohol-

based marker (left) and color layered with a water-based marker (right). The

alcohol-based marker swatch includes six layers of color and has not torn up

the paper, whereas the water-based marker swatch includes just four layers

of color and has started to tear up the paper. You'll learn more about the

differences between alcohol-based markers and water-based markers

on the next page as well as throughout this book.
