Autograft, allograft, demineralized bone matrix, ceramics (e.g., tricalcium phosphate), growth factors (e.g., BMP-2 and BMP-7), platelet-rich plasma, bone marrow aspirate, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound are some strategies that have been used to either manage bone defects or augment and accelerate fracture healing. (see Chapter 8, Biologics, for more discussion on biologics in orthopaedic trauma).
