COVERINGS AND LININGS
ОглавлениеThere are many different fabrics used when recovering traditional furniture. As illustrated, start with the hessian base and work your way through the layers to build a strong foundation for the proper sequence of coverings and linings.
1 & 2 Hessian is used on top of webbing or springs to act as a base for the hair stuffing, and can be found on traditional or modern pieces of furniture. Hessian is available in three different weights – 213 gm (7.5 oz.), 273 gm (10 oz.), and 366 gm (12 oz.) – and is usually 18.3 m (72 in.) wide. The 366 gm(12 oz.) is the best quality and should be used at all times if available.
3 & 4 Scrim is another form of hessian that is like cheesecloth – it has a very loose and airy weave, and is often used for cheap curtains. It is used when a second stuffing and a stitched edge are required on a chair. The evenness of its weave makes stitching an edge easier. It is available in No. 2 or No. 7. qualities. No. 2 is the thickest, with a higher number of yarns to the inch. No. 7 is a looser weave cloth and is used similarly to the No. 2, but is easier to use where the frame has a curve. Both of these scrims are available in a 72 in (183 cm) width. A superior quality scrim is made from linen – this only comes in a 36 in (92 cm) width.
5 Calico (sometimes known as cotton duck) is used to cover and tighten the stuffings that have been applied to a chair. Use calico underneath a top fabric as it takes the strain before the top fabric is applied. Calico will also hold the stuffing in place if the cover needs to be changed. Use good quality calico where possible and take care if it has been treated for fire retardancy, as the fabric can be very brittle and easy to tear. It is often better to use an untreated calico and then a barrier cloth on top to conform to fire retardancy requirements.
6 & 7 Platform lining is a strong cloth that comes in various colours and is used on seats underneath loose cushions. However, this makes the cushion non-reversible. In its black form it is used on the underneath of chairs to neaten and act as a dust barrier.
8 Cambric is a strong cotton fabric used to make cushion pads. It is wax-proofed to prevent feathers and down working their way through the fabric.
9 Blue and white ticking is also used for making cushion interiors and traditionally is a twill weave and blue and white.
10 Stockinette is a knitted fabric that comes in rolls, and is used for covering foam cushions. It is easy to apply although the raw edges at the ends of the cushion need to be overlocked.
