ОглавлениеMidyear Corvettes have been restored, modified, and kept in survivor status for many years. Plenty of books about how to restore them have also been written, with the majority covering the correct numbers-matching aspect. We have plenty of nearly perfect specimens representing the Midyears’ rich history in cocoons protecting them from the harsh environment. Of the approximately 125,000 Midyears built, why not drive a few? This restoration book covers the importance of the numbers-matching angle and how it can affect the value of your finished project, but the main focus is to help you restore a fun, drivable Midyear without lessening its ultimate resale value. No Midyear Corvettes were harmed during the writing of this complete restoration book, and in fact, all modifications are reversible.
This book gives you an idea of which cars to look for or avoid and, more importantly, which to modify or leave factory original. Once you find a candidate for purchase, a rigorous pre-purchase inspection is detailed so you avoid buying a car that has major mechanical or body problems that will cost you big money. As you progress through the book, it explains the correct flow of work to keep you on track, which saves valuable shop space while managing your time efficiently. I also cover where to locate parts so you have them on hand when needed for a particular procedure.
In-depth restoration procedures, including plenty of photos and explanations, are presented in an easy-to-understand format. The mystique of correctly repairing damaged Midyear Corvettes fiberglass body panels is shown in great detail. Painting and preparation tricks and techniques are shown to create a Midyear you may just want to drive or make a top-dollar show car.
Owning a Midyear to show is one thing, but setting one up for driving on today’s public roads requires real seat time. Detailed explanations of upgrading components for better overall performance and adding creature comforts are provided. The Midyear braking system, for example, went through a number of changes throughout its existence. I explain how to choose the pieces for the best possible braking system without devaluing your early Corvette. The upgrades make the car safer and more enjoyable to drive, whether it’s a daily driver or a weekend cruiser.
The procedures covered are gleaned from many years of hands-on experience and from a true Corvette shop perspective. Insight into what the savvy mechanic should and should not do is covered in detail. If outside restoration help is required, and in most cases at least one or two phases necessitate it, this book helps show you whether the procedures have been performed correctly. I have performed and written the procedures, not translated and then put into words by someone else. The one exception is the overall exterior paint itself. Although we do not do overall paint in our shop, we have been involved in many paint restorations. My number-one goal is to make novice restorers feel comfortable with the work and decisions made as they restore their first Midyear Corvette.
