ASSESSING THE EXPERIMENT

Оглавление

Critical self-questioning and an attention for the students’ day-to-day practices is particularly important in journalism education (Jordaan, 2018). During the experiment and at the end of it, feedback sessions were organized allowing students to compare their results and confront them with scientific literature and position papers. The feedbacks from the students provide an insight about the results of the experiment and its adequacy with the teaching objectives and the students’ daily use of social media.

In addition to that, the first experiment was the subject of a study. The AJM students completed a survey both before and after the one month experiment. Each student also participated to one of the three focus group sessions held by the teaching staff. The objective was to discuss the results of the experiment and debrief their team work, the strategies they developed and their takes about a professional use of social networks in order to assess the educational outcomes of the experiment.

The teaching method evolved from more rigorous protocol and hypothesis towards a higher degree of liberty for the students to define their own hypothesis. It also evolved from 8 profiles with the intervention of many students on the same profile to an individual experience on similar profiles.

The main objective of this experiment was for students to change their way of looking at content platforms and even their own practices. The survey conducted by questionnaire made it possible to measure the interest of such an approach. Although they were big consumers of a network like Facebook in 2017, few students were aware of the algorithmic games, the filtering phenomena or even the filter bubble. At the end of the experiment, some of them even announced that they wished to modify their use of these platforms in the future, towards a more conscious and, if possible, controlled use.
