WHEN WE THINK OF PIONEERS, many of us automatically picture Conestoga wagons crossing the prairie, sod huts, settlers fighting off Indian attacks from encircled wagons. As for me, I like to think of the pioneers who settled Florida during the same time that others were conquering the West. Crackers endured just as many hardships as their Western counterparts, braving the thick, often impassable palmetto scrub and swamps, as well as the intense heat, snakes, Indians, and outlaws preying on them. Today, fortunately, tiny pockets of the early history of Florida have been preserved around the state.
