Preface

One of the best ways to understand a culture is to examine the way its people think. Nowhere is this more evident than in a country’s proverbs, wisdom distilled over centuries into epigrammatic sayings, ways of conducting one’s life. From the proverb Deru kugi wa utareru (The protruding nail will be hammered), one can perhaps learn more about the Japanese tendency toward conformity than from a closely written text.
