Stanley Matthews, who served from 1881 to 1889, edited the weekly Tennessee Democrat and later the Cincinnati Morning Herald. Melville Fuller, who served as chief justice from 1888 to 1910, was an editor of The Age, a daily newspaper. John Clarke, who served from 1916 to 1922, was publisher of The Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio. William Howard Taft, who served as chief justice from 1921 to 1930, was a reporter for the Cincinnati Commercial during his law school days. James Byrnes, who served from 1941 to 1942, was the owner and editor of the Aiken Journal and Review in Aiken, South Carolina.
