Dave Nagel, MS Ed, is a full-time Professional Learning Consultant with Corwin. Dave has been a professional developer both nationally and internationally since 2003, working deeply with schools in the areas of assessment, improved grading and feedback actions to promote student learning, instructional leadership, and effective collaboration focused on ensuring both student and adult learning. Dave has done significant research related to effective collaboration and has developed practical instruments to assist collaborative teams in monitoring their adult behaviors to ensure having an effective team. In addition to his professional development work with teachers, leaders, community members, and other stakeholders, Dave is also a frequent speaker at state and national conferences and has contributed to several books, including Effective Grading Practices for Secondary Teachers, and published articles. John Almarode, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Education at James Madison University who has held directorships with the Center for STEM Education Outreach and Engagement and the Content Teaching Academy. Prior to his work with schools, he served as a mathematics and science teacher in Virginia. John has engaged in professional learning with teachers and instructional leaders across the globe, integrating the science of how we learn into classrooms in all content areas and across all grade levels. He has published numerous books on teaching and learning, such as Clarity for Learning and From Snorkelers to Scuba Divers. He can be reached at almarojt@jmu.edu.


Douglas Fisher, PhD, is Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a leader at Health Sciences High and Middle College. He has served as a teacher, language development specialist, and administrator in public schools and nonprofit organizations, including 8 years as the Director of Professional Development for the City Heights Collaborative, a time of increased student achievement in some of San Diego’s urban schools. Doug has engaged in Professional Learning Communities for several decades, building teams that design and implement systems to impact teaching and learning. Nancy Frey, PhD, is a Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a leader at Health Sciences High and Middle College. She has been a special education teacher, reading specialist, and administrator in public schools. Nancy has engaged in Professional Learning Communities as a member and in designing schoolwide systems to improve teaching and learning for all students. Karen Flories, MS Ed, is a full-time Professional Learning Consultant for Corwin and works with teachers and leaders across the nation. Prior to her role with Corwin, Karen was the Executive Director of Educational Services and Director of Literacy and Social Studies in Valley View School District, after serving as the English Department Chair for Romeoville High School. Karen’s classroom experience includes high school English, special education, and alternative education. She has co-authored several books, including student learner notebooks on Becoming an Assessment-Capable Visible Learner for Grades 3–5 and 6–12. She can be reached at karen.flories@corwin.com.
