Chapter One: Why Creativity Now?

Оглавление

But there is [a vital force or energy] in man, a spirit [of intelligence] and the breath of the Almighty gives men understanding. Job 32. 8

So I begin with the million dollar question why creativity now?

I have always had a keen and curious mind and have always been an imaginative person. When I was young, I recall that I would often imagine myself in several seemingly unreal situations doing unreal things. I was told I was an active little girl with so many childhood dreams. Looking back now, those days seem very unreal to my natural mind because back then, there was no physical outlet or means to express my childish spark and fantasy. In spite of this, I kept on dreaming. There was no one or nothing that inhibited or stopped me from dreaming. However, there came a day I dared to share one of my dreams with my siblings and for the first time I began to realize that my dreams were simply mine. They were way out there, unrealistic at least in the material world that I lived in. I began to retreat mentally as young girl. I dare not share this unrealistic world with anyone. I developed the habit of concealing my fantasies and kept it all to myself.

But trust me as time went on, I found a way out. I cultivated a second internal world of my own; what I later called my private and real universe. This was my world of unlimited possibilities. There I could do anything I wanted. I fantasized. On many occasions in my mind, I painted lovely pictures, I drew incredible art forms, I colored using unusual color combinations, I imagined myself travelling to a various parts of the world. I mixed and matched shades of colors, I flew over mountains. I literally did the impossible in that world. All made possible by the most unique gift of God to all mankind… our Incredible Mind.

Later on in life, I came to realize that my imaginative gift was essentially part and parcel of who I am - my true essence. My gift is not an unusual gift from what all of mankind has been freely bestowed with. It is the gift of imagination freely given to us by our creator, the designer and architect of the universe. Yet so many times we minimize ourselves in so many ways and stop ourselves from living our most creative life. I would make bold this assertion that we are in essence creative beings just because we are alive and humans living on planet earth. We learn sometimes in childhood and certainly later to diminish the bright light we bring into this world to make it smaller, to hide it or to put a shade on it. We have that incredible spark when we are children; we lose it as we grow into the world of comparisons and perfectionism. Don’t we?

Now I have a two-year-old toddler who has again generously awaken that part of me albeit in a deeper valuable dimension. In my blog I fondly refer to him as my creative marathon. I partly give credit to my quest and revival of creative juices to my two-year-old who has given me the unique opportunity to dream again, to constantly move in and out of a child’s world of limitless possibilities and realities.

You see a toddler’s world is a unique and simple one. I believe every child’s internal environment is perpetually conditioned to take the limits off and see the world as it should be without challenges, limitations or inhibitions.

I love watching and observing the world of kids. I recently visited the bank to deposit a check. As a normal, regular bank customer, I had all the adult moments going on in my head. As I waited patiently in what appeared to be an endless line waiting to be served, I planned my day in my mind. I visualized and organized my items and to do list I was into my internal world of sorting out and organizing when all of a sudden my eyes scrolled over to two little siblings (a boy and a girl ) playing around and having some fun. I stopped my world of adult thinking as I normally do when I watch kids. I watched them play and carry on life as if nothing ever mattered. I longed for their world and then the scene shifted. They ran towards a sofa, literally climbed up into it together, and bumped themselves while they both comfortably found a spot to sit in. It was seamless. Almost like a movie, naturally, flawless. I continued observing them and then heard the boy asked the girl (I believe it was her sister) – Did you dream last night? What did you dream about?

Girl’s response: Oh well. I dreamt about the trees in our garden. I saw a little doll she had purple hair and purple flowers were all around her. She went on and on chatting away. Well you know that caught my attention. She kept talking and I listened on. I listened keenly and with curiosity. She was done and the boy said. Well, let me tell you my own dream

Boy: I dreamt that we went on fishing. We caught a big shark in the water and he kept on narrating. I listened intently to him narrating his dream. I was in their world of spark, fantasies and dreams. I longed to join them and tell them my own dream. To feel like what they felt to have a simple dream. I was in their world loving it, when suddenly I was awaken to the real world by a sudden shout “Whose next in line how can I help you?” It was my turn. I quickly faded into the NOW of our adult world and headed to the teller. My escapade was over. It did not last long but when it did it was perfect. Isn’t it amazing how kids can draw you out into their true world of dreams and awaken yours in the process?

But you may ask how does all of this tie into being creative and why creativity now?

My simple response is this. Why later??

You see the human intelligence unlike any other creation on earth is profoundly and uniquely endowed with creativity because we were wired that way by the creator. Our God- given DNA is imprinted with 10 powerful letters spelt C R E A T I V I T Y. There is indeed in every human being a vital pull and push, a force of energy. It is called creativity. The pull and push force of energy in every human being is not relegated to the future. It is happening right now as I write. It is call the vital force of energy. Yes it a vital force of energy and the bible refers to it as the spirit of intelligence. The spirit of intelligence is the spirit of creativity and every human being comes into this planet packaged with it. In other words, human beings or the human spirit was not left bankrupt during creation by the creator. Human beings were filled up, endued supernaturally and extraordinarily with in-built forces and juices that are creative in nature.

You see the creator and architect of the universe could not help but operate in creativity frequencies when he created the universe and declared let there be light, let there be land, let there be waters as is recorded in the first chapter in Genesis and guess what? what he said was accomplished.

This same creator, source and architect could not come to creating human kind his highest order of expression without planting in him the same capacity to create like he possessed. He essentially made human beings, creative beings. In other words he created you and I using his exact imprint and imprimatur. Therefore, creativity is now because you are essentially wired creative. To take it a step further, it is recorded in Genesis that the creator put his very creative breath into you making you and most likely your whole being including your breath, creative. Now what an extraordinary feat that was. Oh that we can come to the full realization and understanding of this greatest act of love. If ever there was a time when we as humans need to be aware of our innate creative nature, it is now.

To further build upon my argument of why we need to become aware of and release our creativity now let us start with first things first. Let us go to the beginning of beginnings and take a look again.

But there is [a vital force or energy] in man, a spirit [of intelligence] and the breath of the Almighty gives men understanding. Job32. 8

Let me begin by defining what a force is. A force can also be described by intuitive concepts such as a push or pull. In essence a force encompasses a push or pulls movement. It is the capacity to do work or cause physical change. A force is that which changes the state of rest or motion of a body. It is pertinent to note that a force has both magnitude and direction. In scientific terms a Force equals = Mass times acceleration (F = ma). In physics or geometrical construction a force is regarded as an influence that causes an object to undergo a certain change, either concerning its movement and direction.

I therefore submit to you that creativity like a force has both magnitude and direction. Creativity is a vital force of energy that every human being possesses. Energy on the other hand is the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. It is also a feeling of possessing such strength and vitality. Creativity therefore is comprised of both the spiritual force and spiritual energy resident in every human kind.

So if we break down and decode the above quote what we are literally saying is that there is a vital push or pull in man. There is in every man a force which changes or tends to change the state of rest or motion. It is called the spirit of intelligence. This spirit of intelligence is also the spirit of creativity. You see human beings are naturally endowed with a huge creative capacity. It is incumbent that we become truly aware of this.

I recently read a report in a science journal about scientists who were studying the power of conditioning. These scientists leashed a dog to a stake. Then they put the animal’s food just out of reach. When the dog tried to get to the food he hurt himself because his leach wasn’t long enough. Every time he lunged toward the food he felt pain. By the fourth week of this cruel experiment the dog stayed right at the stake. He didn’t even try to reach for the food. During the fifth week they removed the leash and put him two feet away from the food. But by now the dog stayed next to the stake. The animal refused to go near the food. He has been so conditioned by the pain that kept him reaching his food that although he was free to eat he believed he could not eat. That dog almost starved to death during the last seven weeks of his testing. He wouldn’t move from the stake even though the food was accessible. They had to pick the dog up and carry him to the food to slowly recondition him. This experiment cruel as it was demonstrated that when the mind of an animal is condition it will live within the limits imposed upon it even after it is set free.

The same is true about our awareness and recognition of our innate creative abilities. We have been conditioned by this world of perfectionism that creativity is not really for us. And even if we think we could have a shot at it we often relegate it to the future not right now? However let me take our minds back to the beginning because the beginning of things is always instructive.

In the beginning God created. Genesis 1:1

In the beginning the act of creativity was the first and premier revealed attribute of our creator. Take note of the fifth word Created. It is an active word, a motion word, a “push and pull” word changing something or the present condition from a state of rest or disorder to the state of motion. Before the beginning, everything was chaotic, empty and disorderly. However in that state of chaotic emptiness and disorder the architect’s creative energy/ force came on display. Immediately order and beauty was restored and emerged out of chaos and emptiness. The result was a perfect world.

But the architect went further. He did not keep this heroic act to and for himself only. When he blessed humankind in the beginning, he delegated authority to the human spirit to replenish the earth (Gen 1:28). The word replenishes means “filling again by supplying what has been used up.” Therefore mankind was left with the responsibility of subsequent supplying and filling up what had been used. Mankind was also left with the right of subsequent creations. Fast forward to our current twenty-first century. It is abundantly clear that there is no area of human endeavor that has not been affected as a result of man’s creative abilities. Back track and we see an architect millions of years ago announcing. Let us make man or human kind in our own image and in our likeness. He was saying in effect let us download our same attributes, capabilities and powers of creative energy into man so that he is made in our likeness (sameness) and image (a representation of the external form of a person).Humankind was born and is wired to be creative. Creativity now is not a mandate to human kind. It is essentially who we are.

We are currently living in times of great unprecedented global revolution. We are living in a season globally where there is a change from one order or state of things to another. The year 2012 is a pivotal year where there is a lot of transition politically, economically and spiritually. If we are to survive and flourish in this era of change, we must think differently about our abilities and make the best use of them. No matter where you are or what you do if you are alive at this time, you are a part of this constantly changing global revolution. There are forces at work for which there are no precedents. It is incumbent for your thriving and surviving that you have an invisible reservoir of capital working for and with you to survive and thrive in these times. I call that edge and capital Creativity.

The times in which we live in are taking a toll on every human being. You are been affected whether you like it or not, whether you are aware of it or not with the changing globalization all around you. The sometimes chaotic and uncertainty of the world systems today are crying out loudly for another display and command of order, this time been spearheaded by human beings. It is almost like a dejavu. First it was the architect and creator who spoke and released his creative energies to create order in the chaotic disorderly and empty world then. Now it is our turn to do the same in the twenty- first century where we find ourselves. It is now over 2000 years since our first creator put into display his creative energies in fixing chaos. Now it is our turn to naturally imitate him.

The great revolutions in human history have often been brought about by new ideas. By new ways of seeing that have shattered old certainties. We are living in a world that is changing faster and calling for new ideas. Realizing our creative potential is partly a question of finding our core being. Education has and should help us find this but too often it does not. Too many people are displaced from their own true talents. They are out of their core gifting’s and out of their minds in that sense.

Every environment, event or outstanding thing in life was created by someone. Nothing happens by accident. It takes creativity to make things happen. There are many discoveries and inventions to be made in virtually every field of human endeavor. This includes spiritual, scientific, social, mental and physical discoveries. God released us into the earth a co-creators to refill the earth by engaging our creative energies . Just as a toddler imitates his or her parents naturally, so God expects us to be good imitators of him in creation.

The creator and architect of the universe wired into us and invested in us his super abundant limitless supply of creative juices. That is why he commissioned us to replenish the earth and contribute to the world. There is so much that has not entered the realm of the consciousness of human kind the he wants to release and download.

Finally we are instructed to remember Now our creator in the days of your youth

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”— Ecclesiastes 12:1.

When we observe and become aware of how creativity flows directly from the essence, being and character of the architect of the universe we are compelled to mimic his creative character in our own very lives. Because we originate from him we cannot but be creative or possess the seed of creative potential ourselves. We are conditioned creative, we are wired creative and our DNA speaks to creative potential. Think about it you must mimic God’s creative character. Have you ever notice how easy and seamless a young two-year or one-and-a-half year-old toddler mimics every little thing, or action you do or say? For them it is naturally. They cannot help it. They do it naturally. No effort, no sweat just being themselves they imitate us and are reflective mirrors of us. So God wants us to mimic him in realizing and becoming aware about out creative potential. It is natural if we do so. It flows effortlessly from our realization and awareness that we come from God. For in him we live, we move, and we have our being. Acts 17:28 If the fifth word in the book says created then to my mind it counts for something.

Creativity is now because by virtue of our human nature us been human kind or human beings we are already loaded and wired with creative potential. If you look back throughout history, you can see how work evolved period by period. The first period of work was comprised of family occupation by default, meaning you were for the most part born to do your parent’s job. If your dad was a barber, you became a barber. A blacksmith, you became a blacksmith. A farmer, you became a farmer. A lawyer, you became a lawyer Very few were able to digress from this path due to limited opportunities. Then the industrial revolution hit. Workers were needed by companies to work in factories and workers usually stayed with that one company until they retired with a pension.

Now we live in a period of globalization and e-commerce. Work is rapidly being outsourced overseas because it’s becoming more cost effective for companies to do so and technology is slowly replacing human workers as well. I remember the first time that the aspect of technology replacing human workers really hit me was when I saw robots assisting humans at the airport in Japan for the first time. It was an eerie feeling knowing that a clerk could easily be replaced by a machine.

According to the IBM 2010 Global CEO Study, which surveyed 1,500 Chief Executive Officers from 60 countries and 33 industries worldwide, CEOs believe that, “more than rigor, management discipline, integrity or even vision - successfully navigating an increasing complex world will require creativity.” The best defense you have against these times of change is developing your creativity potential. . Creative people will always be in demand in these changing. I want to leave a powerful thoughts with you.

Being Creative is not separate from LIFE. It is not one more thing added in, because when you make creativity a priority in your life it permeates all parts of your day. I am not saying that every mundane task suddenly becomes filled with excitement and joy, but putting creativity at the forefront does mean that you are more likely to find ways to infuse your tasks with a creative flair. Remember you are a creative being.
