CHAPTER 1:

DEE FISH: HOW I LOST 54 POUNDS

My husband and I had an amazing time dancing and toasting the New Year at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. But the next morning, when I started to download photos from the party on the computer, I had one thought.

I looked disgusting.

At 5-foot-2, 179 pounds and up 40 pounds in just a few years, I hadn’t seen myself in a photograph in a while. For some reason, it crystallized for me how out of control my weight had gotten.

I started gaining weight in 2007 after my grandmother, the woman who raised me had died. Then I was involved in a bad car accident in 2009 which didn’t help matters. I was so depressed and I was eating out all the time. I had built my entire social life around the next meal.

I was ashamed of myself. I needed to do something.

I started walking five miles a day and lost 10 pounds. It was really painful though because of my injuries from the car accident. One week I actually gained a pound!

Then I found out about hCG. I was completely skeptical at first. My husband and I made an appointment with Sonia my doctor’s hCG diet nurse and coach. She told us I should lose 30 to 35 pounds in about 6 weeks. That was a half a pound a day at least.

“Was that possible?” I asked.

“Yes, you can do it!” Sonia told me.

We grilled the nurse for 45 minutes, fired question after question at her. Why had I not heard of this diet before? Where had it come from? Would I lose fat or muscle? She had an answer for everything. I couldn’t decide whether she was a really good salesperson or just truly passionate about this diet. It all seemed too good to be true.

As we walked out, my husband told me there was no way I could do the diet described and not lose muscle. But I decided to try it. What did I have to lose?

I didn’t like needles so I decided to take the hCG sublingually, which means that every morning I’d squeeze drops under my tongue and keep them there for a minute until it absorbed.

The first few days, I was told to load up with food. It scared me to eat so much but I went to Carrabba’s, Bonefish Grill, IHOP and even got a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

On day 3, I started the low-calorie diet that I would maintain while taking the hCG. I was allowed just 800 calories a day. That day, I ate grapefruit and egg whites in the morning, 4 ounces of tilapia and a salad for lunch and a small portion of chili made with organic beef plus broccoli and applesauce for dinner.

On day 4, I was amazed when I weighed myself. I had lost 4 pounds! By day 8, I wrote in my journal: “Exciting, down eight pounds!” From then on, I was like, hah, this is great.

During the first few days of taking the hCG, I had missed certain things; breads, pastas, ice cream and most of all….creamer in my coffee. But I found that I wasn’t hungry at all. Some days I had to force the food down.

As I continued the diet, I didn’t lose the weight as fast but I was still dropping a half pound a day on average.

By day 30, my husband’s birthday, I was down 22 pounds. I had stayed away from people mostly in the beginning but now I was getting out and they were noticing. Some of my friends thought I was sick because I’d lost so much weight so fast. I told them, “No, I’m on the hCG diet.” Some of them were so impressed they got started on it too.

The worst day was Easter dinner. My family – I’m married and have two daughters, ages 15 and 10 – gathered at my sister’s house. I brought strawberry shortcake and I couldn’t have any of it. I had to pull containers of chicken and vegetables from my purse. But I got through it because I was determined.

I have to say that the hardest part of this diet was accepting the fact that I was losing so much weight. I know that sounds crazy but I couldn’t believe it.

It changed the way I viewed food. It changed the way I prepared food. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be.

The last day I took the hCG, I weighed 136 pounds. I had lost 33 pounds.

For 72 hours, I stayed on the low-calorie diet. Then, I was allowed to increase my calories to 1,500 and expand what I ate. For example, instead of being allowed to eat only white fish, I could now eat salmon.

I stayed on that phase of the diet for 21 days and didn’t gain any weight.

At the end of that, I decided it was time to go shopping. I’m a real estate agent and I was having a real hard time finding clothes to wear to work that didn’t look like a potato sack on me.

So I went to the mall. It was in JC Penney that I had this really great moment. I found some nice black dress pants but I didn’t know what size to bring in the dressing room.

I had been a size 14 before the diet. I tried a size 9 but there was way too much room in the waist.

I tried a size 7. Still too big.

As I pulled the size 5’s up around my waist, I was shocked to find there was actually room to spare in those pants. I looked in the mirror and turned around. I couldn’t believe it. I burst into uncontrollable tears right there in the dressing room by myself. It had been such a long time since I had looked good in anything.

Then I ran out of the dressing room to find my husband proud.

I was shocked at my last office visit when I was told that I lost 9 inches in my waist with this diet. It made me realize that everything I did to get here was worth it.

After losing all this weight, I feel more comfortable around my husband. I went out and bought my first bikini in years. I used to be so embarrassed to show my body that I wouldn’t even go swimming at the beach. I would wear tank tops and shorts.

Today I weigh 123 pounds. My total weight loss has been 54 pounds and now I am wearing a size 2. I bought my first pair of low waist jeans. After making the commitment by following through on this diet, I can honestly say it has changed my life. This diet really works. If you have a desire to do it, it will work for you.
