Orientation

Landscape mode: Layout approximates the print edition.

Portrait mode: Continuously scrolling text with tappable thumbnail images.

Navigation Bar

Tap just below the iPad status bar for the navigation bar, containing these icons:

Returns you to the iBooks Library

Opens a contents page or thumbnails

Adds your highlights and notes to the text

Adjusts screen brightness

Adjusts text size (portrait mode only)

Searches for a word or page number

Marks a specific page and indicates

Recently Viewed pages

Table of Contents

Landscape mode: The Contents icon reveals scrollable thumbnails of every page, chapter by chapter.

Portrait mode: The Contents icon opens a Table of Contents screen. Tap a chapter’s title to open it.

Links in Text

Red type within the main text indicates a link to a figure, endnote, or website. Endnote numbers are in {curly brackets.}

Return to the text from an endnote: Tap the endnote’s number.

Return to the text from a figure: Tap the bookmark icon and see Recently Viewed Pages.

Within the text: Tap on a word for its dictionary definition.

Images

Tap on an image to view it full-screen, or pinch and zoom out.

Rotate the iPad as necessary for maximum image size.

Tap on the image at full-screen to eliminate title and caption; tap again to bring them back.

Tap the X to return to the text.
