PLEASE NOTE:

The bags in this book are designed to be sewn by hand, though most of the steps can be completed by machine. For those steps that require hand sewing or for any project that you would like to hand sew from beginning to end, thread that is specifically intended for hand sewing is recommended. These threads tend to be stronger and are less likely to knot as you work. Hand sewing threads should not be used in your sewing machine.

All-purpose threads intended for both hand and machine sewing can also be used. As with any sewing project, care should be taken to choose the right thread for your fabric. If using these threads to hand sew (especially when sewing seams and gussets or attaching handles), a little beeswax worked into the thread will add smoothness and strength.

Measurements in this book are given in both inches and metrics unless otherwise noted. The metric measurements are more precise, and using them if possible will result in a better finish.

AUTHOR’S FOREWORD

Hand-stitched bags are soft and easy to use. Create the handles and straps the width and length to suit you and the bags will mold themselves to your body, resulting in a treasured item you can use for years.

The sewing process has been designed to be simple even for beginners.

It’s fun sewing the front and back of a bag together, then turning it right side out. Take it easy and enjoy your sewing time, guiding a needle in and out through fabric that’s pleasant to touch.

Why not pick up a sewing needle and make a start?
