Local effects
ОглавлениеThe composition of periodontal microbiota does not appear to be influenced by diabetes, according to the majority of the existing literature.31 Diabetics exhibit increased BOP, and this tendency increases as the level of diabetic control decreases.32 In a longitudinal study in Pima Indians, more than 2,200 subjects were enrolled and followed up for 2.5 years. The incidence of periodontitis was 2.6 times higher in diabetics compared with nondiabetics.33 Similar findings were reported from an epidemiologic study of the same population, with diabetes increasing the risk for periodontal disease by three times.34
