A memoir is similar in structure to a feature film. Early in the story an inciting incident takes place, and it irrevocably changes the course of the protagonist’s life. This moment presents the protagonist with a challenge, that if taken up, sends them on a journey that ultimately transforms them into someone new. Into someone they would not have been had they not taken up the challenge of the journey.

As you read my book, you will discover in its pages the story of the inciting incident that came into my life like a thief in the night and sent me on a journey that challenged and transformed my life in ways I would never have imagined.

That is why I chose to write a memoir and not an autobiography, which is simply the chronological story of one’s life.

This book is a work of non-fiction. All the events are true, and I describe them as best as my memory allows. In some places I have purposely omitted or changed the names and places of the people and/or organisations involved to protect their identities.
