Neurons release neurotransmitters at their presynaptic terminals. In most neurons this happens by a process called vesicular release and works in a way that is similar to secretion. During vesicular release, calcium enters the presynaptic terminal through voltage-dependent calcium channels. (Chapter 4 discusses this process in more detail.)
