Li (2011) identified communication challenges faced by Chinese and U.S. colleagues in multinational organizations. These same challenges apply to communication between the two countries:

 As a high-context culture, China employs implicit nonverbal messages such as facial expressions, body language, and symbolic objects to interpret verbal messages in contrast to low-context U.S. culture.

 High context and low context are closely associated with collectivism and individualism, respectively. In high-context cultures, people tend to view themselves as part of a larger community and learn to value harmony. In low-context cultures, individual goals and autonomy are stressed.

 Consistent with collectivism and individualism, in high-context cultures communication can be more indirect compared to that in low-context cultures, which can be more straightforward and assertive.

 Particularly in high-context China with more authoritarian government, people are more predisposed to maintain and accept the status quo and may appear obedient to the low-context United States.

 Particularly in high-context China, expediency and special circumstances may take precedent over low-context explicit written laws and contracts.
