In the Meadow of Light
CHAPTER 2, Where Grace Has a Disagreement

Оглавление

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28

What force could make it possible for one person to come into the dream of another? Even at her young age, Lucy was already convinced that it was possible to achieve anything that you truly believe into.

Moreover, it was not just one bold idea Lucy was thinking about. The weirdest thing, in the opinion of her teachers, was another one: every day as Lucy was doing her classwork, chatting with her friends, laughing and playing like all the other kids, she was also waiting for her daddy and little sister to come.

It would not be so strange, if the teachers, as well as all the other people of Meadow of Light, who had known Grace and Lucy for a long time, were not assured that Grace was a single mom and that Lucy had just imagined her father and little sister. Because they were the majority, and grownups, they preferred to think that their opinion was right and hers was wrong. They liked to talk about Lucy as of a girl with a vivid imagination, in the best case, or as a freak, in the worst.

Five months ago, Lucy was talking about her father and sister in school with no fear. When she realized no one believed her and, after some kids laughed at her, she decided it was better to talk about the past only to her mother.

Lucy did not become surly. She was the same opened-hearted girl. But she learned to keep quiet about her daddy and sister. However, some of the kids did not forget and often said things like: “Hey, Lucy, there is your daddy coming!” Of course, she would turn and look for him with hope and joy, though there was no daddy, and she would run away from the playground and cry or grit her teeth and try not to show the hurt and disappointment because that made the bullies laugh at her again.

Nevertheless, she never stopped waiting and believing that her daddy and sister would come back.

At home, every morning she was expecting them to wake her up, and then she was waiting for them to come by afternoon, to get her from school; next she was hoping they would come by the evening time and have supper together, then the evening would pass alone, and, in the night time, she was in another world in the Kingdom of Grace, finally with her daddy and sister again… until morning.

Lucy’s literature teacher, Mrs. Weldy, anxious thin blond with short, always negligently styled hair, once shared with Grace:

“Your daughter amazes me. Her thoughts are so deep, and her conclusions are so unique, that I believe she must have some supernatural abilities. I shall confess to you – I have a journal where I write down anything special that my students say or do.”

She trotted to her desk where, among the other papers, there was the journal, – it was large notebook of about two hundred pages. Mrs. Weldy opened the journal and went through the pages filled with her fast, illegible handwriting. She stopped somewhere in the middle, “Listen what Lucy told me recently – ‘There are other worlds, unknown and undiscoverable to many people, because they do not believe in them, Mrs. Weldy!’ and then, – ‘Many people do not know a thing about time traveling, though this is so easy! I do it all the time. You must think about it very hard, and to believe honestly that you can do it.’”

Grace, trying not to be rude, cut off the conversation, “Thank you, Mrs. Weldy, for keeping the records, but it is just normal fantasy, imagination… There are no supernatural abilities, I can assure you. Oh, look at the time. I have to leave you now. Lucy has piano lesson in thirty minutes.”

Grace regretted cutting the conversation off. Mrs. Weldy was a good teacher and had a nice personality. Usually Grace enjoyed talking to her. Just not about Lucy’s supernatural abilities. Grace did not want to become too personal with Mrs. Weldy and then be disappointed. Grace thought that there was nothing more than curiosity behind Mrs. Weldy’s attention. She thought, that the teacher wouldn’t believe anything she could tell her about Ray and their youngest daughter, Sonya.
