Carcass disposal

Оглавление

Carcasses from post-mortem examinations (PMEs) must be disposed of safely and hygienically. Post-mortems should be performed on washable surfaces so that surface water and ditches are not contaminated. The post-mortem shown in Figs 3.3 to 3.5 is far from ideal. Carcasses need to be buried in a deep covered pit at least 4 m from a watercourse (these are no longer allowed in the UK) or incinerated. If carcasses are to be picked up by a knacker-man or an agent of the Fallen Stock Scheme (this only operates in the UK), they should be dragged to a specially prepared concrete area on the outside of the holding so there is no need for a possibly contaminated vehicle to enter the holding. Ideally this should be a building which can then be refrigerated. It should have appropriate drainage and be capable of cleansing and disinfection.
