Ready-to-Carve Project Blanks

Carvers loved Bill Johnson’s chip-carved sphere illusion,

which appeared in

Woodcarving Illustrated

Spring 2017

(Issue 78), but they didn’t like drawing the pattern onto

the plate. Inspired by their struggles, Bill created a new

product line: preprinted carving blanks. Using a unique

printing technique, chip-carving patterns are printed

directly onto high-quality basswood blanks. The lines are

purposely light so the carver can clean up the finished

project by “erasing” with a gentle sanding. Of course the

sphere pattern, printed on a 10" (25.4cm)-diameter plate,

was Bill’s first design, but he has also created a greenman

plaque and a couple of two-sided practice boards. One

of the practice boards is printed with a grid and the

traditional patterns Bill uses in his classes, and the other

just has a 4mm grid and is intended for drawing and test-

carving new designs. Bill notes that he will have several

more designs available by the end of 2017.
