Clean the back of the bark off.
Use a 1" (25mm) #5 gouge.
Draw a line about 1" (38mm) from the bottom to separate the
lighthouse from the base. Carve along the line with a 5/8" (16mm)
V-tool. Then, use the 1" (25mm) #5 gouge, a V-tool, and a bench
knife to thin the lighthouse section. I use a backhand grip with the
gouge, which allows me to remove wood quickly and safely.
1
Round the lighthouse.
Use the 1" (25mm) #5 gouge, V-tool,
and bench knife. As you carve, use a pair of calipers to check the
roundness of the tower. Look straight down from the top; you will
be able to see areas that are out of round. Reduce the lantern room
at the top to about 1" (38mm) diameter, and taper the rest of the
tower to match.
2
Mark the bottom of
the lantern room.
Refer to
the pattern. Carve along the
line with a 1/8" (3mm) V-tool.
Use the knife to taper the top
of the tower to the V-groove.
Repeat the process until the
bottom of the lantern room
protrudes " (6mm). Round
and taper the tower to match
the diameter of the area just
below the lantern house.
4
Shape the roof of the lantern room
(the cupola).
Use the bench knife. I rounded
my cupola and added the small nub that acts
like a vent on the top.
3
Cut off the lantern house.
Use a
coping saw. Rotate the blank as you cut to
keep the cut straight. Draw a line " (6mm)
down from the top of the tower. Carve along
the line with the 1/8" (3mm) V-tool.
5
Make a stop cut around the tower.
Use the bench knife to deepen the V-tool
cut made in Step 5. Relieve down to the stop cut to create a tenon. Repeat the stop and
relief cuts until the diameter of the tenon is about " (6mm) thinner than the rest of
the tower. Drill a 15/32" (
12mm)-diameter by 1" (25mm)-deep hole in the center of the
tower for the LED party light. Dry-fit the light into the hole, and adjust the shape of the
lighthouse to center the light on the tower.
