Now we’re ready to answer the big question. Remember, the question is not ‘What are the most famous works of art?’ or, ‘Who are the greatest artists?’ It is a much more important question than that. It’s a question about you.

The big question is:

Why is art important — to you?

The answer is:

A work of art is important to you if you’d like to have it in your ideal room.

And:

An art gallery is important to you because it contains suggestions about what you might like to have in your room.

Right now, you might not have worked out all the things it could be really great to have in your room. There might also be lots of posters and pictures you’d love — but you do not know about them yet.

All the people who have made and collected art are speaking to you. They’re saying: We liked these things in our rooms. Maybe there’s something here that might excite you as well.

Most of the art in the world will not excite you, and that is completely fine. You don’t need to like everything, and you do not need to have a huge number of things in your room.

You just need to find the few things that are most meaningful to you.

Finding these things is a project that you are starting right now, and that can go on for the whole of your life.
