Example 1 Creative Enquiry Introduction into Year 1 General Practice Attachment

Оглавление

Creative enquiry was introduced as an option in the year one GP attachment course I lead (2004–2010). This involved the whole year group of students having the choice to write a reflective essay or engage in creative enquiry in relation to a patient home visit [26, 27]. I supported medical student engagement with creative enquiry by explaining the concepts of right and left brain processing, engaging students in a drawing exercise and presenting former student creative work in the introductory lecture. Each year students stretched the creative space further pushing deeper into uncharted territory of visual art, video, dance, music compositions and more (www.outofourheads.net). After five years 85–90% students were choosing the creative enquiry option. What initially surprised me, more than the powerful aesthetics and well‐crafted texts that the students began to produce, was the depth and breadth of thinking on practice and the introduction of the subjective and personal voice. Student work was evocative for the GP educators also, transforming perceptions of patients, of students and the value of the arts in medical education.
