3.4.1.2 Type and Amount

Оглавление

Is the food appropriate for the species? Are the animals actually eating it? Is there a store of food on hand that gives you confidence that the owner can provide the amount of food the animals require daily? Is the food expired or stored where it has become contaminated by insects or rodents?

Note: It is common to investigate starvation cases where the owner assures you the animal has access to food but is not interested in eating. In these cases, you can offer the animal a treat or some food or ask the owner to feed the animal, in order to confirm the owner's statement. A thorough examination and diagnostics by a veterinarian will aid in confirming if starvation was due to an underlying medical condition or inadequate amount of food. More information about investigating starvation cases is included in Appendix A.
