INTRA‐OPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS
ОглавлениеIntraoperative complications during dental implant surgery may occur despite the most meticulous treatment planning and preparation. Most of these complications can be addressed adequately with minor additional surgery, or slight alterations in the restorative prosthodontic plan. Few of these complications are life‐threatening or result in a permanent patient disability, but the chance of such severe complications is not nonexistent. It is the responsibility of the clinician to include a discussion of “probable versus possible” risks during the informed consent process. The discussion should include risks of bleeding, pain, swelling, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, neurosensory disturbance, failure of integration, failure to obtain restorability, displacement of implants (e.g., to the maxillary sinus, fascial spaces), implant or implant component aspiration or ingestion, mandible fracture, and the possible need for additional procedures. Of course, surgical training and experience impact upon the likelihood of experiencing complications, as with any surgical procedures.
