R | Good morning. What can I do for you? |
J | Good morning. I’d like to book a flight to America. |
R | To the United States? For how many people? |
J | For two people, my friend and me. |
R | How long are you planning to stay there? |
J | For two weeks. We’re going to visit New York, then we’re going to stay with my friend’s cousin in San Francisco. She’s going to show us the Grand Canyon. Then we’re going to spend a week in Washington ... |
R | In two weeks? You’re going to be very busy. You’re going to fly everywhere in America then? |
J | Fly? What for? |
R | Well, it’s a big country, you know. Look, New York to San Francisco. It’s over 4,000 miles. |
J | Oh dear. It’s going to be very expensive. |
R | Why don’t you fly direct to San Francisco and fly back from New York? You can return from San Francisco by bus - by Greyhound bus.It won’t be too expensive and you’ll see all the scenery. When are you leaving? |
J | We’re leaving on May 7th and coming back on the 21st. |
R | You can fly from Heathrow at 11.20 in the morning and you’ll arrive in San Francisco at 15.45 local time. And you’re going to stay with your friend’s cousin there, aren’t you? |
J | Yes, that’s right. She’s taking us to the Grand Canyon in her car. |
R | I see, that journey’ll take you at least two days.Where are you going after that? |
J | We’re going to Washington and New York. |
R | Then you’ll have to take the Greyhound bus to Denver, and then to Chicago and then to Washington and then to New York. |
J | Yes, all right. What will the weather be like at that time of the year? |
R | Oh, it’ll be fine.In fact, at the Grand Canyon it’ll be very hot. |
J | Aha, and how much is it all going to cost? |
R | Just a moment.The Greyhound ticket will cost 200 dollars for 14 days. |
J | 200 dollars each? |
R | Yes, of course. You can travel as far as you like. |
J | How many days are we going to have in New York? |
R | Well, you won’t have long.(She’ll be lucky to catch her plane!) |
R | What are you going to do in New York? |
J | Well, we’re going to climb the Empire State Building and I’m going to visit the Museum of Modern Art.My friend’s going to attend a concert in Central Park. She’s not interested in modern art. |
R | She?Ah, your friend’s a girl? |
J | Of course. Now how much is the flight going to cost? |
R | Let me see. From Heathrow to San Francisco and from New York back to London - that’ll be 1,300 dollars each. |
J | 1,300 dollars! And 200 dollars for the Greyhound ticket... oh dear ...That’s going to be too much for me.I won’t go to the States after all.My friend will have to travel alone.I’m so sorry. |
R | That’s all right. What about a holiday in Britain for you? |
J | A holiday in Britain? Where? |
R | What about Scotland, for example? We’re offering an interesting trip to Scotland. Two weeks from May 7th.Do you know Scotland? |
J | No, not yet. Doesn’t it rain there all the time? |
R | Nonsense.It won’t rain all the time.There’ll be some fine days. |
J | How much will it cost? |
R | It’ll only cost you £150. |
J | And what does that include? |
R | It includes the train fare from London to Edinburgh and back, then a guided tour of Edinburgh and Aberdeen, then a trip through the Highlands.Of course the guide’ll take you to a whisky distillery and perhaps he’ll show you the Loch Ness Monster. |
J | Oh, good. |
R | But there’s only one place left on this tour! |
J | Oh, I see.I’ll take it.Is the guide really good? |
R | Yes, he is.Will you please sign your name here? You’ll find all the details on this sheet. |
J | Tour of Scotland, 7-21 May. |
R | Yes, that’s right. |
J | I think I’m going to enjoy Scotland. |

15 D | The Future | Die Zukunft |
a) Present Continuous | Verlaufsform der Gegenwart |
When are you leaving? | Wann reisen Sie ab? |
I’m flying to New York next week. | Ich fliege nächste Woche nach New York. |
“when”, “next week”, “tomorrow”, “in May” etc.
b) Future Tense with “going to” | Zukunft mit “going to” |
I’m going to spend a week in New York. | Ich werde eine Woche in New York verbringen. |
We’re going to attend a concert. | Wir werden ein Konzert besuchen. |
I think I’m going to enjoy Scotland. | Ich glaube, ich werde Schottland genießen. |
Die Zukunftsform mit “going to” wird verwendet, wenn eine Absicht oder ein hoher Wahrscheinlichkeitsgrad ausgedrückt werden soll oder wenn wir eine Art Vorhersage machen.
c) will-Future | Zukunft mit “will” |
