1 Commenting on the Raid, Foley described it as a ‘very dark night – beastly ride – rather a bore.’ (Quoted by David Frith, My Dear Victorious Stod, p. 173.) It was not the end of his adventures: in 1909, he went to Jerusalem in an attempt to discover the Lost Ark of the covenant.

16 A similar fate was to befall Fry’s cabin-mate, Sammy Woods. While in his fifties, he suffered considerable discomfort from a rheumatic hip – the result of falling off a camel. ‘I was in charge of a bunch of those sods,’ he said, ‘when they stampeded and made for a cactus forest; so off I rolled and fell a bit wrong.’ (See R.C. Robertson-Glasgow, 46 Not Out, p. 129.)

17 In total, Lohmann took 157 wickets at an average of 6.8.

18 However, C.B. had reservations about Hawke’s captaincy. In Life Worth Living, he described Hawke as ‘a very good captain off the field’, ‘a superfine manager of a cricket tour’, ‘a diplomat and a social success’, but added that ‘the story of his being a great captain was a myth’ (pp. 105–6).
