Getting Started—Basics & Beyond

Оглавление

I am pleased to bring you Appliqué: The Basics & Beyond with a new addition for wool appliqué. The book still retains all of the details about hand and machine appliqué but with added information about materials, supplies, stitching, and embellishing that are used for wool appliqué. There are two new projects designed just for wool and additional photos and information throughout the book on using the original projects and patterns with wool. The format includes specific steps for preparation, stitching, and embellishing. Be inspired by the nine projects and then treat yourself to full-size patterns plus options for designing your own unique projects.

Equipment & Supplies is a must first read. Use this information for selecting tools and supplies as you prepare appliqué pieces and stitch appliqué projects. Most items are familiar, but experiment with the unfamiliar to ease the appliqué process and enhance your work.

Preparing Appliqué explains how to make appliqué pieces for several hand and machine techniques. Detailed instructions and step photographs are given for each preparation. Review the various techniques and practice them with a simple leaf or heart to discover your preferences.

Stitching demonstrates the many machine utility and basic hand stitches used for appliqué. Each stitch type includes details of when to use the stitch, special stitching instructions, illustrations, and photographs for curves, corners, and points.

Notebook includes information that is important to many of the techniques in a chapter. The yellow background alerts you to review this section.

Tips offer helpful ideas for making your appliqué better or easier, although they are not essential to the process. The green background identifies these tested tips.

Embellishing shows many stitches, both machine and hand, that can give texture and definition to enhance your appliqué design. This includes using them on the edge of an appliqué piece instead of a utility stitch. This section also features photographs (left, Wool Appliqué section) and illustrations for beading, couching, and hand embroidery.

Projects showcases seven appliqué quilts and two new wool projects. The level of difficulty ranges from beginner to advanced. Each project has detailed stitching and embellishing instructions. Be Creative at the end of each project features ways to make a unique project by mixing and matching other patterns, stitching, and embellishments.

Patterns includes all the patterns to make the projects in this book, as well as many options. Some of these options will be types or sizes of patterns that may be best for hand appliqué, turned-edge appliqué, or fusible web appliqué. The pattern pages also include close-up photographs of stitching and embellishing options and a sample layout for using the patterns.
