Making a Project—Basics & Beyond

Оглавление

When you are familiar with the appliqué techniques in this book, choose a project you’d like to make, referring to the following steps to create your own unique quilt.

1 Select the project and patterns. (Spring Border, page, is used here for illustration.) Use daffodils, tulips, narcissus, and muscari, or use one of the variations in the Be Creative section at end of the pattern.

2 Select your appliqué techniques. You may make the project as presented using paper-backed fusible web and machine stitching or choose your favorite preparation and stitching methods for hand or wool appliqué.

3 Select colors and textures using plant catalogs, garden magazines, and real flowers to get ideas.

4 Select fabrics, looking at different flower and foliage combinations. Audition them on the background, referring to the illustrated layout or as desired. Remember, when you are simulating nature, no two flowers grow alike. Prepare and fuse the appliqué pieces to the background.

5 Try different flower arrangements and colors after the background and fence are stitched. First, prepare the flower unit motifs, page. Arrange the flowers and foliage, referring to the illustrated layout or as desired. Overlapping some leaves and stems gives the design depth. Remember, if you are simulating nature, no two flowers grow alike. Fuse the flowers and foliage to the background.

6 Practice stitching and embellishing using suggestions in the project and techniques in the Stitching and Embellishing sections. Stitch the appliqués, add borders, layer, quilt, and bind your project. Embellish with beads and add hand couching or embroidery.
