How does the size of the UK compare to European countries?

Оглавление

We’ve already found out that the United KingdomUnited Kingdom covers all of the island of Great BritainGreat Britain plus a smaller part of the island of IrelandIreland, Northern IrelandNorthern Ireland (plus a few thousand smaller islands). Using rounded numbers in square kilometers (in spite of the British preference for miles): United Kingdom 250,000; EnglandEngland 130,000; WalesWales 20,000; ScotlandScotland plus lots of islands way up north 80,000; Northern Ireland 15,000. A comparison: GermanyGermany is considerably larger than the United Kingdom at more than 350,000 square kilometers and FranceFrance as well as SpainSpain are individually more than twice as big as the UK, which ranks as number eight in area but makes up only about 5 % of the entire area of the EU. But as we learned above, the island of Great Britain is the largest in Europe (if we conveniently ignore GreenlandGreenland …) and more than twice as big as Iceland (and considerably more pleasant climate-wise as we’ll be seeing a little later on).
