Sustainability & Gender Equality

Оглавление

Another area where Christians all too readily support a structure of sin is through gender inequality. The UN’s emphasis on the equal inclusion of women in leadership positions and finances goes against many traditions that relegate women to the lowest stratum. In UN jargon, there are two ways for women to be agents for sustainability. First, they make up roughly 50 percent of the world’s population. If half of the world is silenced and their potential and gifts are quenched, then the world is only functioning on one half of its potential. Second, children depend on their mothers, and so if there is a lack of care and options for women, this will negatively impact the well-being of future generations, of nations in general, and the global population – including men.

Moreover, those who are negligent and abusive of women are also – because of the functioning of the structures of sin – often abusive of God’s creation, which further impinges on the future. Thus the UN promotes the inclusion of women in all ruling structures and advocates legislation to ensure sustainability. Yet even though women need to be at the core of common global interests, the Consultations on the Status of Women (CSW) forums suggest that even the most cataclysmic predictions for the earth are not averting the irrational interests of the predominantly male hierarchical structures around the globe. Breakthroughs in equal participation take a long time and often seem insignificant. In addition, as one layer of discrimination is removed, new enslaving traditions emerge.
