METHODS OF DECORATING LEATHER Tooling Calf and Steerhide

Оглавление

Preparation of the Leather. Moisten the leather only sufficiently to make it pliable. Use a damp sponge or cloth and rub well over the flesh side first, then go lightly over the surface, until the color darkens uniformly. Do not have the leather wet enough for any moisture to ooze out when the tool is applied.

Edge Creasing. The creasing operation is shown in illustration A as applied to the edges of the front and flap of an unlined coin purse. This may be done before or after the design is applied but should precede any skiving or thinning of the edges.

Cut A

Transfer of Design and Flat Modeling. The design shown is for the flap of a purse. A blue print or drawing of the design on tracing paper or cloth is placed over the leather, which is laced flesh side down on a smooth surface such as plate glass or marble. It may be held in place with paper clips, sketch A. Go over the design with the tracer tip of the modeling tool, creasing sufficiently to leave a clear impression on the leather. Remove the paper and go over the lines carefully, retracing until a bold impression is obtained. Sketch B, Fig. 1. This alone is a simple and effective decoration.

Cut B

The illustration B shows a coin purse flap and hand position in tracing the design. Note that the tracing paper is cut the exact size of the flap. This insures correct position of the design and equal margins.
