4.Hammer down the background around the design with a round pebble dot background tool using a rawhide covered striking stick or hard wood mallet.

5.Depress all edges which show overlapping with a modeling tool or a beveling tool. See No. 52, Fig. 45.

6.Apply the scallop shaped tools, see 61, 62, 63, Fig. 45, as indicated in Fig. 44.

7.Apply the horseshoe shaped tools, Nos. 58, 59 and 60, as indicated.

8.Apply the oval depression tools. No. 54, 55, 56 along the floral outlines to give relief to plain areas.

9.Apply tool No. 64, using the corners to produce leaf veins. The section of a music roll in Fig. 44 shows this detail.

10.After the carved design is completed, and the leather is thoroughly dry, the background areas may be darkened with oil, or stained brown or black. This gives contrast and makes the design stand out clearly. After this is dry, the entire surface may be polished with the hand or cloth, using a little leather dressing.

The Brief Case shows a design well balanced between background and floral areas and a reentrant border which adapts it to a rectangular area.

The wallet shows an attractive carved and stamped design for the front panel and a solid panel of basket weave stamping with a horseshoe type border.

The quivers show an interesting carved and stamped design with two panels or bordered areas of diagonal basket weave stamping.
