Hand positions

How you hold your pen tip in relationship to the working surface

directly affects the width and darkness of the stroke. While

you are working your practice board, try several different hand

positions using the same pen tip, temperature setting, and

texture fill pattern.

1

Grip area.

Variable-temperature burning system pens come

with a grip area that keeps your fingertips well away from the hot

wire end.

2

Upright.

Holding the pen tip in an upright position allows only

the very point or top edge of the tip to touch your work. This

creates fine lines or fine shading strokes.

3

Standard grip.

Hold your pen exactly as you would an ink pen,

using a comfortable writing position.

4

More contact.

Laying the pen tip into a lower, closer to the

surface, position allows more of the pen wire to contact the

surface and therefore creates darker, wider burn strokes.
