I can’t hear a reply. The dreadful voice inside my head is drowning Arty out. I try hard to concentrate and remember my times tables,

but now my little monster brother is shouting. “Look! Look! I can get to school before you!”

As he races off on his scooter at full speed, my life flashes before me. I can only begin to imagine what Mum will say if he hurts himself. He’s speeding down the steep hill towards the busy road. I run as though my life depends on it and just manage to grab him as he crashes into the loud group of children at the bottom, scattering them like angry ants.

Sammy turns around and frowns at me. I hear the word, “Idiot.” My life is going to be a misery in class today.
