I glance out of the corner of my eye. I’m hoping that at least by sprinting, I’ve left The Shadow behind. Great, it’s gone.

But then I see it’s holding the school gate open for me. It’s raining so, after all that, basketball practice is delayed until lunchtime. It’s only now I realise I’ve left my English homework on the kitchen table. That means trouble with Mr Tinns.

The playground is full of jostling children and so much noise. My brother’s friends are screaming. I can’t hear myself think.

I can just make out Arty’s soft tone trying hard to be heard above the racket.

Think of your brain in two parts. I’m up here and down below is where all your feelings live. It’s just like this playground full of noisy children. All your feelings are trying to be the loudest, all wanting to be heard above the rest.

Yes, that sounds like our playground all right!
